About the Author:
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables. She wrote numerous novels, poems and short stories. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1935. This short story is about a brother and a sister living on an isolated island with their father, who, through a series of incidents, get reunited with their long-lost relatives. It is a touching tale that underlines the value of relationships.

The story revolves around an eleven-year-old girl, Philippa, her twelve-year-old brother, Claude, and their father, who live in the Big Half Moon lighthouse. They often feel lonely on the isolated island and wonder why they have no relatives like everyone else on the mainland. One summer, they make a big red kite and paste their names on it. When the kite gets torn by accident, they quickly patch it with an old letter they find in their sitting room. The kite accidentally sails away to the mainland.

A month later, their father receives a letter and reveals his sad past—he had quarreled with his brother, left home, and eventually lost touch with his sister. The runaway kite was found by Dick and Mimi. Their mother, Aunt Esther, recognized the old letter on the kite as the very one she had once written to her brother. She also recognized the names Claude and Philippa. She immediately wrote a letter back. Their father then brought Aunt Esther, Dick, and Mimi to live with them on the island, and the family was happily reunited.
