One morning I went to Ballygunge Government High School with my maternal uncle.

একদিন সকালে আমি আমার মামার সাথে বালিগঞ্জ সরকারী উচ্চবিদ্যালয়ে গিয়েছিলাম।

The class teacher gave me a few questions to answer and also a few sums to solve.

ক্লাস টিচার আমাকে উত্তর দেওয়ার জন্য কয়েকটি প্রশ্ন এবং সমাধানের জন্য কয়েকটি অংক দিয়েছিলেন।

I wrote the answers, solved the sums and showed them to the teacher.

আমি উত্তরগুলি লিখেছিলাম, অঙ্কগুলি সমাধান করেছিলাম এবং সেগুলো শিক্ষককে দেখিয়েছিলাম।

He went through the answers and nodded.

তিনি উত্তরগুলি দেখলেন এবং মাথা নাড়লেন।

His gesture indicated that my answers were correct and thus I was admitted to the school.

তাঁর ভঙ্গিমা ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছিল যে আমার উত্তরগুলি সঠিক ছিল এবং এইভাবে আমাকে স্কুলে ভর্তি করা হয়েছিল।

Ballygunge Government High School was on the eastern side of the Beltala Road Police Station.

বালিগুঞ্জ সরকারী উচ্চবিদ্যালয়টি বেলতলা রোড থানার পূর্ব দিকে ছিল।

The southern part of the school was our playground.

স্কুলের দক্ষিণ অংশটি ছিল আমাদের খেলার মাঠ।

It was surrounded by a lofty wall.

এটি একটি উঁচু প্রাচীর দ্বারা বেষ্টিত ছিল।

When seen from above, the school looked like the English letter “T”.

উপর থেকে যখন দেখা যায়, তখন স্কুলটি ইংরেজি বর্ণ “T” এর মতো দেখাচ্ছিল।

The vertical part of the “T” was the hall of the school and the horizontal part of the letter was formed by the row of classrooms.

“টি” এর উল্লম্ব / লম্বালম্বি অংশটি ছিল স্কুলের হলঘর এবং অক্ষরটির অনুভূমিক / সমান্তরাল অংশটি শ্রেণিকক্ষের সারি দ্বারা গঠিত হয়েছিল।

The annual prize distribution ceremony was held in this hall, which had a gallery as well.

এই হলঘরটিতে বার্ষিক পুরষ্কার বিতরণ অনুষ্ঠান অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল, যাতে একটি গ্যালারীও ছিল।

Feasts, on occasion of Saraswati Puja, were also arranged here.

সরস্বতী পূজা উপলক্ষে ভোজ এর আয়োজনও এখানে করা হয়েছিল।

I still remember the experience of watching a Shakespearean play in this hall.

এই হলের শেক্সপিয়ারিয়ান নাটক দেখার অভিজ্ঞতাটি এখনও আমার মনে আছে।

The play was The Merchant of Venice, a few scenes from which were performed by a couple of foreign actors called Greenberg and Salim.

নাটকটি ছিল মার্চেন্ট অফ ভেনিস, যার মধ্যে কয়েকটি দৃশ্যে গ্রিনবার্গ এবং সেলিম নামে কয়েকজন বিদেশী অভিনেতা অভিনয় করেছিলেন।

A Charlie Chaplin movie was also screened here once.

চার্লি চ্যাপলিন ছায়াছবিও এখানে একবার প্রদর্শিত হয়েছিল।

There were quite a number of good teachers in our school.

He was a small man who took great care to ensure that we pronounced English correctly.

তিনি একজন ছোট মানুষ ছিলেন যিনি আমরা ইংরাজিকে সঠিকভাবে উচ্চারণ করেছি কিনা তা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য খুব যত্ন নিতেন।

One day he told us the story of The Ox and The Frog from Aesop’s fables.

একদিন তিনি আমাদেরকে ইসপের কল্পকাহিনী থেকে ষাঁড় এবং ব্যাঙের গল্পটি বলেছিলেন।

Before telling us the story, he taught us how the pronunciation of ‘the’ depends on whether the following word begins with a vowel or a consonant.

I fondly remember our head pandit, Bhattacharya Sir, for his excellent handwriting.

As a result, I became the favourite of our drawing teacher, Ashubabu.

He was given the charge of decorating the hall for the annual prize-distribution ceremony.

He also conducted an event called ‘Music drawing’.

তিনি ‘মিউজিক অঙ্কন’ নামে একটি ইভেন্টও পরিচালনা করেছিলেন।

For this event, there would be a blackboard and coloured chalks on a table.

এই ইভেন্টের জন্য, একটি টেবিলে একটি ব্ল্যাকবোর্ড এবং রঙিন চক থাকবে।

A student would sing a song and another would draw a picture on the blackboard, trying to capture in lines and colour the essence of the song.

In this way, through many such happy and memorable episodes, I spent six years of my school life.

Ten years after leaving school, I went back there just once, probably to attend a reunion of ex-students.

As I entered the hall, I noted with surprise that I could not recognize it.

The hall which had seemed enormous earlier, did not seem to be quite that big then.

Not only the hall, but even the doors, the classrooms, the benches and the corridor appeared to be much smaller.

This feeling was natural, though.

I was five feet three inches tall when I left school and now I have grown to about six and a half feet.

স্কুল ছাড়ার সময় আমি পাঁচ ফুট তিন ইঞ্চি লম্বা ছিলাম এবং এখন আমি বেড়ে প্রায় সাড়ে ছয় ফুট।

I have grown a lot in all these years, but my school has not.

আমি এই সব বছরে অনেক বেড়েছি, কিন্তু আমার স্কুল বাড়েনি।

I have never gone back to my school since then.

আমি এর পরে আর কখনও আমার স্কুলে ফিরে যাইনি।

It is indeed a pleasure to look back and relive the past moments of joy.
