THE CLEVER MONKEY

Once upon a time there lived a monkey on the bank of a river.

একসময় নদীর তীরে একটি বানর থাকত।

Right in the middle of the river there was a small island with many fruit trees.

নদীর ঠিক মাঝখানে অনেক ফলের গাছসহ একটি ছোট দ্বীপ ছিল।

Sweet and juicy fruits grew on the trees.

গাছে মিষ্টি ও সরস ফল ধরত।

At a distance from the bank, there was a huge rock in the river.

পাড় থেকে কিছুটা দূরে নদীতে একটি বিশাল পাথর ছিল।

A part of it was above water.

এর একটি অংশ ছিল জলের উপরে।

One day, attracted by the delicious fruits, the monkey jumped to reach the rock and from there leapt onto the island.

একদিন, সুস্বাদু ফলের দ্বারা আকৃষ্ট হয়ে বানরটি লাফিয়ে পাথরের কাছে পৌছাল এবং সেখান থেকে লাফিয়ে দ্বীপে গেল।

“Not so difficult, after all,” he said to himself. ”

মোটেই খুব কঠিন ছিল না, সর্বোপরি,” সে নিজেকে বলল।

Soon he was enjoying the sweet fruits from the trees.

শীঘ্রই সে গাছগুলি থেকে মিষ্টি ফল উপভোগ করতে লাগল।

There was hardly any other animal there, so he was in no danger.

সেখানে অন্য কোনও প্রাণী খুব কমই ছিল, তাই তার কোনও বিপদ ছিল না।
Hence, the monkey decided to visit the island every day.

সুতরাং, বানর প্রতিদিন এই দ্বীপটিতে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল।

On the far bank of the river a big crocodile lived with his wife.

নদীর দূরবর্তী প্রান্তে একটি বড় কুমির তার স্ত্রীর সাথে থাকত।

One day, he noticed the monkey crossing the river in his unique way.

একদিন সে লক্ষ্য করল বানরটি তাঁর অনন্য উপায়ে নদী পার হচ্ছিল।

He told his wife, “Did you see him ? Let’s catch him tomorrow.

সে তার স্ত্রীকে বলল, “তুমি কি তাকে দেখেছ ? চলো আগামীকাল তাকে ধরব।

Next morning, however, the crocodile found that catching the monkey was not easy.

পরের দিন সকালে, যাই হোক, কুমিরটি দেখল যে বানরটিকে ধরা সহজ নয়।

The monkey landed on the rock and in a flash jumped off onto the island.

বানরটি পাথরের উপর নেমে গেল এবং মুহূর্তমধ্যে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ল দ্বীপে।

Hiding behind the rock, the crocodile could only watch him.

পাথরের আড়ালে লুকিয়ে কুমির কেবলমাত্র তাকে দেখতে লাগল।

He returned home without his catch.

সে তাকে না ধরেই বাড়িতে ফিরে এল।

Days went by.

দিন কেটে গেল।

The crocodile thought of many plans to catch the monkey, but nothing worked.

কুমিরটি বানরকে ধরার জন্য অনেক পরিকল্পনা নিয়েছিল, কিন্তু কিছুই কার্যকর হয়নি।

The monkey always escaped from his clutches.

বানর সর্বদা তার খপ্পর থেকে পালিয়ে যেত।

One day his wife said, “You’ve failed to catch the monkey, but I really want to taste his sweet flesh.

একদিন তাঁর স্ত্রী বলল, “তুমি বানরটিকে ধরতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছ, তবে আমি সত্যিই তার মিষ্টি মাংসের স্বাদ নিতে চাই।

So, this time, you must follow my plan.”

সুতরাং, এই বার তোমাকে আমার পরিকল্পনাটি অনুসরণ করতে হবে।”

The crocodile said, “Right, tell me the plan then.”

কুমিরটি বলল, “ঠিক আছে, তাহলে আমাকে পরিকল্পনাটি বল।”

“The monkey jumps on that big rock in the river, “said the wife, “You must lie still on the rock.

“বানরটি নদীর বড় পাথরটির উপরে লাফিয়ে যায়,” স্ত্রী বললেন, “তোমাকে অবশ্যই পাথরের উপর শুয়ে থাকতে হবে।

When he jumps upon you, thinking you to be a rock, you can catch him easily then !”

যখন সে তোমাকে পাথর ভেবে তোমার উপরে লাফিয়ে পরবে, তখন তুমি তাকে সহজেই ধরতে পারবে!”

“What an idea! I’ll get him tomorrow for sure. “said the crocodile with joy.

“কি দারুণ আইডিয়া! কালকে আমি তাকে নিশ্চিত করেই পেয়ে যাব।” আনন্দে কুমির বলল।

Next morning, as usual, the monkey jumped onto the rock and landed on the river island.

পরের দিন সকালে যথারীতি বানরটি লাফিয়ে পাথরের উপরে ঝাঁপিয়ে নদীর দ্বীপে নেমে গেল।

Seeing this, the crocodile swam to the rock.

এই দেখে, কুমিরটি পাথরের দিকে সাঁতারে পাথরের কাছে গেল।

He lay still on the rock, keeping his head and tail well underwater.

সে মাথা এবং লেজ জলের নিচে রেখে পাথরের উপর শুয়ে রইল।

Only his back was above water and it looked like a part of the rock.

কেবলমাত্র তার পিঠটি জলের উপরে ছিল এবং এটি পাথরের একটি অংশের মতোই দেখাচ্ছিল।

After having a good meal, the monkey decided to return.

ভাল খাবার খেয়ে বানর ফিরে আসার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল।

He looked at the rock.

সে পাথরের দিকে তাকাল।

“Strange! The rock has become so large!”, he thought,” It wasn’t so big when I came here.

“আশ্চর্য! পাথরটা এত বড় হয়ে গেছে!”, সে ভাবল,” আমি এখানে আসার সময় এত বড় ছিল না।

Possibly that crocodile is playing a trick again. He’s lying there, pretending to be a rock.”

সম্ভবত কুমির আবারও একটি কৌশল নিয়েছে। সে সেখানে শুয়ে আছে, শিলা হওয়ার ভান করে। ”

The monkey made up his mind very quickly.

বানর খুব দ্রুত মনে মনে তৈরি হয়ে নিল।

He shouted, “Hello, Rock! My dear friend! You look quite big today.

সে চেঁচিয়ে বলল, “হ্যালো, পাথর! আমার প্রিয় বন্ধু! তোমাকে আজকে অনেক বড় দেখাচ্ছে।

And you didn’t welcome me today as you always do.

এবং তুমি আজ আমাকে স্বাগতা জানাও নি যেমনটা তুমি সর্বদা করো।

Are you angry with me ?”

তুমি কী আমার উপর রাগ করেছ ?”

Hearing him, the crocodile thought : “Perhaps this rock really talks to the monkey.

তাঁর কথা শুনে কুমিরটি ভাবল: “হয়তো এই পাথরটা সত্যিই বানরের সাথে কথা বলে।”

I should speak to him posing as the rock, otherwise he might suspect something.”

আমারও তাঁর সাথে পাথরের মতো ভঙ্গি করে কথা বলা উচিত, অন্যথায় সে কিছু সন্দেহ করতে পারে।”

So he said, “No, no, my friend. You’re always welcome.”

তাই সে বলল, “না, না, আমার বন্ধু। তোমাকে সর্বদা স্বাগত জানাই।”

“If you aren’t angry, why are you looking so different ?” said the monkey.

“তুমি যদি রাগ না করে থাকো, তবে কেন তোমাকে এত আলাদা দেখাচ্ছে ? বানর বলল।

At this, the crocodile got impatient.

এতে কুমিরটি অধৈর্য হয়ে উঠল।

He raised his head above water and said, “I’m not a rock, you stupid! I’m a crocodile.

সে জলের উপরে মাথা তুলে বলল, “আমি পাথর নই, বোকা! আমি কুমির।

I’m going to eat you up very soon.”

আমি শীঘ্রই তোমাকে খেয়ে ফেলবো।”

The monkey realized that he could not return home like all other days.

বানর বুঝতে পারল যে সে অন্য দিনের মতো ঘরে ফিরতে পারবে না।

So he made another plan.

তাই সে আরেকটি পরিকল্পনা করল।

He said, “My friend, crocodile, I am so sorry.

সে বলল, “আমার বন্ধু, কুমির, আমি খুব দুঃখিত।

Why did you do all this to catch me ? Just open your mouth wide.

আমাকে ধরার জন্য তুমি এই সব করলে কেন ? শুধু তোমার মুখ বড় করে খুলে রাখো।

I’ll jump straight into your mouth.”

আমি সোজা তোমার মুখে লাফিয়ে পড়ব।”

The monkey had observed earlier that whenever the crocodile opened his mouth, his eyes would shut completely.

বানরটি আগে দেখেছিল যে কুমির যখনই মুখ খোলে, তার চোখ পুরোপুরি বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।

But the crocodile did not know this.

কিন্তু কুমির এটা জানত না।

He was happy at the monkey’s suggestion.

বানরের পরামর্শে সে খুশি হল।

He raised himself on the rock with his mouth wide open, and his eyes closed.

সে তার মুখ বড় করে খোলা রেখে পাথরের উপরে নিজেকে তুলে ধরল এবং তার চোখ বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।

The clever monkey leapt on the crocodile’s head and then quickly jumped back to the river bank.

চালাক বানর কুমিরের মাথায় ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে দ্রুত লাফ দিয়ে নদীর তীরে চলে যায়।

From the safety of his home upon a riverside tree, the monkey laughed at the crocodile and said, “You foolish crocodile! You can never catch me.

নদীর তীরে গাছের উপরে নিজের বাড়ির নিরাপদ জায়গা থেকে বানর কুমিরটির দিকে হেসে বলল, “তুমি বোকা কুমির! তুমি আমাকে কখনই ধরতে পারবে না।

No doubt you’re bigger than me, but you’re a bigger fool too!”

সন্দেহ নেই যে তুমি আমার চেয়ে বড়, তবে তুমি বড় বোকাও!”

The Clever Fox and The Foolish Goat

Once a fox was moving around a village. He wasn’t careful. Suddenly, he fell into a well. He tried his best but failed to get out of the well. A few minutes later a goat came and peeped into the well. Then the fox asked the goat to drink water from the well. The goat believed the fox and jumped into the well. As soon as the goat fell into the well, the fox climbed on the goat’s back. Thus he got out from the well. The goat remained in the well.
