India Creates History with First Test Win at Edgbaston

India defeated England at Edgbaston for the first time ever in Test cricket, marking a historic moment on 6 July 2025. This win not only broke their poor record at the venue but also came with a record margin of 336 runs, the biggest win by runs for India in any away Test. This match was also special because of Akash Deep, who delivered the best-ever bowling performance by an Indian in England.

A Win After Seven Losses at Edgbaston

Before this Test, India had lost seven of the eight Tests they played at Edgbaston, with only one draw. But on Sunday, July 6, that streak was broken in style. This win is also the first time India has leveled a Test series in England after losing the first match. In earlier cases, they either lost or drew the second match after losing the first.

Akash Deep’s Magical Ten-Wicket Haul

Akash Deep took 10 wickets for 187 runs in the match, the best match figures by an Indian bowler in England. He became only the second Indian to achieve a ten-wicket haul in a Test match in England, after Chetan Sharma in 1986—also at Edgbaston. Along with Mohammed Siraj, Akash helped India’s pace attack claim a total of 17 wickets, equaling the record for most wickets by Indian new-ball bowlers in a Test.

Records Broken During the Test

  • India’s 336-run victory is their biggest win by runs in an away Test. The previous best was a 318-run win against West Indies in 2019.

  • Jamie Smith of England scored 272 runs, the third-most by a wicketkeeper in a Test match.

  • The combined total of 1692 runs by both teams at Edgbaston is the highest ever in a Test between India and England, beating the previous record set at Headingley.

  • The total number of runs in the first two Tests of the series (3365) is the highest for any two opening Tests in a bilateral series.
