An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, killing 274 people: 241 passengers, 33 on-ground deaths.
The aircraft, bound for London, plunged into the Meghani area of the city, sending up a massive plume of black smoke and triggering an immediate emergency response. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), there were 242 people on board the aircraft — 230 passengers, 2 pilots, and 10 cabin crew members.
The aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal, with first officer Clive Kundar.
The flight was heavily fueled for the long-haul journey, adding to the intensity of the explosion and fire that followed the crash. The rising death toll beyond the 241 confirmed passengers and crew indicated that the remaining 33 victims were likely people present on the BJ Medical College campus in Ahmedabad students, staff, their families, or others from the nearby Meghaninagar area. possibly doctors,
Quoting witnesses, news agency PTI reported that the plane had lost altitude soon after take-off and hit buildings inside the residential complex, causing damage.
They also said several people living in the quarters near the airport were injured, though there was no official confirmation of this.”
“The plane was flying very low and it crashed into the residential quarters of doctors of the government-run college,” eyewitness Haresh Shah said. Multiple fire engines and ambulances were sent to the crash site to carry out rescue operations.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to initiate a formal investigation, along with a possible technical team from Boeing.
Officials have yet to release a statement on the suspected cause of the crash.
Experts suggest that the heavy fuel load for the international route could have worsened the post-crash fire, complicating rescue efforts. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced the activation of an Operational Control Room at the Ministry of Civil Aviation in New Delhi to coordinate the emergency response.
“In light of the recent incident involving Air India Flight AI171, an Operational Control Room has been activated at @MoCA_GoI (New Delhi) to oversee and coordinate all necessary response measures,” AAI said in a post on X. In a major breakthrough, authorities recovered the black box of the flight. The crucial flight data recorder was found on a ‘rooftop’, likely that of the BJ Medical College hostel building in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area.
