Alfred George Gardiner (1865-1946) was a British journalist and author. His essays, written under the pen-name, ‘Alpha of the Plough’, are highly regarded. His uniqueness lay in his ability to teach the basic truths of life in an easy and amusing manner.

গল্পের সারসংক্ষেপ

English Summary:

The author was travelling on a bus on a bitterly cold night. A young woman boarded the bus with a small Pekinese dog. The bus conductor, who seemed to have a general grievance against passengers, strictly ordered her to take the dog out. The woman refused, citing the freezing weather, and the passengers supported her. The conductor stopped the bus, insisting he had rules on his side. Eventually, the woman went to the top, but when the bus developed engine trouble, she came back down. The conductor repeated his rigid demand, forcing her back up. In the end, the author advised the conductor that rules should be tempered with goodwill and common sense, not just followed to the letter.
