- There is nothing like a book . Nothing has been able to stop the man who writes books . Books have been burnt and writers have been tortured , but books have spread themselves through out the world so that there is no country on earth without them now . They are the only things that live forever .
Ans: বইয়ের মতো জিনিস আর নেই । বই লেখককে কোনো কিছু প্রতিনিবৃত্ত করতে পারে না । বই পোড়ানো হয়েছে , গ্রন্থকার নির্যাতিত হয়েছেন , কিন্তু বই সারা পৃথিবীতে বিস্তারলাভ করেছে এমনভাবে যে , এখন বই ছাড়া পৃথিবীতে কোনো দেশ নেই । বই – ই হলো একমাত্র চিরস্থায়ী ।
- There lived many mice in a house . They caused much harm . So the house – master was compelled to bring in a cat to kill them . The cat was fond of catching game . The mice were now very much afraid of the cat .
Ans: একটি বাড়িতে অনেক ইঁদুরের বাস ছিল । তারা অনেক অনিষ্টের কারণ হয়েছিল । কাজেই তাদের মারতে বাড়ির মালিক একটা বিড়াল আনতে বাধ্য হয়েছিল । বিড়ালটা শিকার ধরায় অনুরাগী ছিল । ইঁদুরগুলি এখন বিড়ালটার ভয়ে খুব ভীত ছিল ।

- Once a soldier was made a prisoner of war . After a few years the war ended and he was released . One day while he was walking near a market he saw a bird – seller with a cage full of birds for sale . The soldier bought the cage and then set all the birds free one by one . When the people around asked him about his strange behavior he replied , ‘ I know the agony of captivity . “
Ans: একসময় এক সৈনিক যুদ্ধে বন্দি হয়েছিলেন । কয়েক বছর পরে যুদ্ধ শেষ হওয়ায় তিনি ছাড়া পান । একদিন তিনি যখন একটা বাজারের কাছ দিয়ে হেঁটে যাচ্ছিলেন , তখন তিনি দেখলেন বিক্রির জন্য খাঁচা ভরতি পাখি সহ এক পাখি বিক্রেতাকে । সৈনিক খাঁচাটি কিনে নিলেন । তারপর খাঁচাটি খুলে পাখিগুলিকে একের পর এক ছেড়ে দিলেন । তার চারপাশের লোকজন যখন তার এই অদ্ভুত আচরণের ব্যাপারে জানতে চাইল তিনি উত্তর দিলেন , ‘ আমি বন্দিদশার যন্ত্রণা জানি ।
- One day Sir Isaac Newton went out of his room leaving on the table a heap of papers containing his long research on the theory of light . There was on the floor of the room lying his pet dog , Diamond . No sooner had he gone than the dog jumped upon the table and upturned the lighted candle and the papers immediately caught fire .
Ans: স্যার আইজ্যাক নিউটন আলোর তত্ত্বের ওপর দীর্ঘ গবেষণার একগাদা কাগজ টেবিলের ওপর রেখে একদিন ঘরের বাইরে যান । ঘরের মেঝেতে তার পোষা কুকুর ডায়মন্ড শুয়েছিল । তিনি ঘর থেকে বেরোতে না বেরোতে কুকুরটি টেবিলের ওপর লাফ মারে এবং জ্বলতে থাকা বাতিটি উলটে যাওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে কাগজে আগুন ধরে যায় ।
- Jagadish Chandra Bose showed that there is no difference between the life of plants and animals . If we give the plants a blow it feel it , if we make them drink poison , they are affected by it like us . Like human beings they also sleep at night and wake up in the morning . They even die like men .

- Once two friend started on a travel . Their way lay through a forest . As they come half way through the forest , a bear was seen approaching slowly towards them . One of them climbed up a tree . The other did not know how to climb up a tree and lay flat on his face without breathing .

- Man is a social animal . He cannot live alone . No person can be happy without having sincere friends . But selfish persons fail to make real friendship . Because to get love , you must give love in return .
Ans: মানুষ সামাজিক জীব । সে একাকী বাস করতে পারে না । প্রকৃত বন্ধু ছাড়া কেউই সুখী হতে পারে না । কিন্তু স্বার্থপর মানুষ বন্ধু পেতে পারে না । কিছু না দিলে তো কিছু পাওয়া যায় না । ভালোবাসার বিনিময়ে ভালোবাসা মেলে ।
- We should try to prosper in life . But we should not give up our sense of morality . If we compromise with dishonesty , it would be difficult for us to respect ourselves . So it is important to choose the right way .
Ans: জীবনে সমৃদ্ধিশালী হতে আমরা সচেষ্ট হব । কিন্তু নৈতিকতার বোধকে আমরা বিসর্জন দেব না । যদি আমরা অসাধুতার সঙ্গে আপস করি , তাহলে আত্মসম্মান বজায় রাখা কঠিন হবে । সেজন্য যথার্থ পথ নির্বাচন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ।
- Newspaper reading has become an essential part of our life . As we get up in the morning , we wait eagerly for the daily paper . Twentieth century was an age of newspapers . Through newspapers we gather information about different countries of the world .
Ans: খবরের কাগজ পড়া আমাদের জীবনের প্রয়োজনীয় অংশ হয়ে পড়েছে । যখন আমরা সকালে উঠি , আমরা সাগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করি খবরের কাগজের জন্য । বিংশ শতাব্দী হলো খবরের কাগজের যুগ । খবরের কাগজের মাধ্যমে আমরা পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশের খবরাখবর পেয়ে থাকি ।
11. Honesty is a great virtue. If you do not deceive others, if you do not tell a lie, if you are strictly just and fair in your dealings with others, you are an honest man. Honesty is the best policy. No one can prosper in life if he is not honest.
অনুবাদঃ সততা একটি মহান গুণ। আপনি যদি অন্যদের সাথে প্রতারণা না করেন, আপনি যদি মিথ্যা না বলেন, আপনি যদি অন্যদের সাথে আপনার আচরণে কঠোরভাবে ন্যায়পরায়ণ এবং ন্যায্য হন তবে আপনি একজন সৎ মানুষ। সততা সেরা নীতি. সৎ না হলে কেউ জীবনে উন্নতি করতে পারে না।
12. One day a dog stole a piece of meat from a butcher shop. He was crossing over a bridge. Suddenly, he saw his own shadow in the water. He thought that there was another dog and he had a bigger piece of meat.

13. One morning monk went out to beg for food. He met a farmer and asked for some alms. But the farmer refused to help him saying, ” I plough my field, sow the seeds and gather the grain. Thus it is only by working hard that I get my livelihood. But how can you obtain yours, since you neither be plough nor sow?“
অনুবাদঃ এক সকালে সন্ন্যাসী খাবারের জন্য ভিক্ষা করতে বের হলেন। তিনি একজন কৃষকের সাথে দেখা করলেন এবং কিছু ভিক্ষা চাইলেন। কিন্তু কৃষক তাকে সাহায্য করতে অস্বীকার করে এই বলে, ”আমি আমার ক্ষেত চাষ করি, বীজ বপন করি এবং শস্য সংগ্রহ করি। এভাবে পরিশ্রম করেই জীবিকা নির্বাহ হয়। কিন্তু আপনি কিভাবে আপনার পেতে পারেন, যেহেতু আপনি লাঙ্গল বা বপন না?”

15. Once on a Summer Day a poor cap seller was going to a fair for selling caps. Being tired he sat under the shade of a tree leaving behind him his basket containing caps. The gentle Breeze made him Drowsy and soon he fell asleep. After a while he suddenly woke up and was surprised to find that there was no a single cat left in the basket. Then he began to cry.

*19* Once to woman were quarelling about the claim of the child. They went to the judge for justice. The judge called the executioner and ordered “cut the child into two halves and give on half to each of the women”. One of the woman when she heard the order remained silent, but the other woman begin to weep.
